St Andrews Day

Happy St Andrews Day Scotland! Today we’re off to Stirling Castle 🙂

Running – A Passion?

Are any of you runners?

I’ve never really enjoyed exercise. At the gym I get competitive and overdo it, classes my weight makes me paranoid. Swimming I do enjoy, but with long thick hair the time getting sorted after just doesn’t make it viable with so many other commitments.

People who run however. They don’t seem to just enjoy it. It’s almost like a passion! They love running.

What is it about running that makes people so enthusiastic?

It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot. I want to be one of them.

My fitness levels just aren’t up to it though.

I read an article that suggested building up which I might try.
Run one minute, walk four. Repeat for thirty minutes.
When you can cope with that…
Run two minutes, walk three. Repeat for thirty minutes.
Keep building until you can run thirty minutes straight.

Does that sound like a good way to start?
How did you start running?
What inspired you to start?

If anyone has any tips to share I’d love to hear them too.

Weight Loss Goa…

Weight Loss Goal

My goal is to lose 43lbs and get back to my high school weight by June 22nd.

That gives me 29 weeks, 1.5lbs a week and I’m there!

Last time I dieted I was 30lbs lighter that now and I was happy with my weight, but my BMI indicates I should be aiming for 43lbs to hit the middle of the healthy range.

Christmas is not an excuse to get fat!

This has been my favourite excuse for the last couple weeks (and every year at about this time). I’ve run out of time to get slim for Christmas, so I’m waiting until after Christmas to start my new healthy lifestyle…

I’ve still got another month, even at a sensible loss I could have half a stone off by then.  But I’m not the only one.  We use Christmas as an excuse not to eat sensibly.

Christmas dinner isn’t all that unhealthy when you think about it.

If the traditional meal was deep fried, lard smothered, chocolate covered everything then fair enough.  But turkey, potatoes, vegetables, it’s not an unhealthy meal.

We have some extra naughty bits on the plate as well. Stuffing and various sauces for example.  But that one meal really shouldn’t be enough to de-rail us for weeks before and after.

So I’m going to start my healthy eating today and keep eating well through the whole festive period.

I’m going to give people little extras like scarves or toiletries rather than the standard box of chocolates and if I’m given chocolate, I’ll have one from the box (then get my husband to put the box on the top shelf so I can’t reach it lol) rather than the one box at a time I’d have had last year.

Is anyone else going to be behaving through the holidays?  I think we might need to share some will power to get through this one!

Mental Strength in Weight Loss

Workouts are easy. The real challenges are faced in the kitchen.

I thought this deserved it’s own post. Motivation!

I trend to blame chocolate for my diets failing, for other people it’s crisps or takeaway food but really we all suffer the same problems.

A lack of motivation and a lack of willpower!

How do you fight it, I’d love to hear tops or tricks anyone else has used, but for now here are some of mine.

Set up a few different boards. Home workout routines, healthy recipes, motivational quotes, inspirational photos of the kind of figure you want to have. I’d love to have Kate Winslets figure. Have you seen The Holiday? There’s a scene where Winslet is standing outside wearing jeans and a fitted tshirt talking to Jack Black. She just looks effortlessly gorgeous. Curves in all the right places. That’s what I’m aiming for, not to be a stick or even athletic. Just natural and still curvy. What would you like to look like?

As well as creating boards, followboards. The more the merrier, cover your home page with diet, exercise, motivation and more. Keep it where you’ll see keep seeing it. Everytime I pop on I get a little motivational boost!

Diet Apps
I’ve tried a few of these and I do think they can be handy. I haven’t the patience to sit and record everything I’ve eaten but I do like the ones that have pop ups and reminders. My favourite is My Diet Coach Pro which has a section to store motivational photos to look at, a section full of one liners to give you a little boost and my favourite part, the Food Panic Button. You hit the button and a timer starts, at the end of the time you decide if you really are hungry. Simple enough but it can help. I’ve tried some others but got pretty bored with them. Have you got any favourites?

The Marble Eye
This is one I heard of at a slimming class, it sounds scary but did actually work! Put a marble (or a button or something else small) into your purse, in with the money. This is “the eye”. When you open your purse to get cash to buy a treat on a whim the eye sees you, it’s watching you (cue creepy music lol). Sometimes it’s just enough to make you think twice and stick to your diet.

Visual Aids
Don’t I sound fancy? Really I just wanted a fancy way to label it. Get two jars and enough pebbles, marbles, whatever, to total the number of pounds you want to lose. Put them into a jar labelled pounds to go, label the other one pounds lost. Sometimes midway can be the hardest part, so this reminds us what we’ve achieved so far.

The Happy Book
Not one I’ve tried, but I’m going to give it a shot this time round. Get a mini pad and pen to keep in your bag. Whenever you get a compliment or catch yourself in the mirror and think you look much better, or run up the stairs without half dying, write it down! When you reach a low point take it out for a quick read.

Friends and Family
This is a big one for me. Dieting is hard enough without going it alone. It used to Dick me how many people came to the slimming class and said their partner was so bringing home takeaways and they were struggling to avoid eating it. No wonder! I’m very lucky that when I diet, that husband and the girls do it with me. Not that my daughters diet, they just switch sweets for fruit or yogurts and instead of baking cakes we make smoothies. If you have friends at work who can keep you away from vending machines our an exercise buddy fantastic!

We need to do the hard work ourselves, but accepting help along the way might make the journey that little bit easier x

Any other motivational tips to share?

Baby Steps

Like most women I’ve been on countless numbers of diets over the years. Some worked quickly but didn’t last, others took longer but I stayed slimmer longer. I know you’re supposed to start your diet asap and not put it off, but I have a bad habit of jumping in with both feet, severe diet, intense exercise routine, then collapsing a week later in my PJs with a tub of ice cream. So this time I’ve set myself a New Year start date, giving me a month to prepare.

Until then I’m going to try out different ways of exercising to find some I enjoy, and maybe practice some new recipes too.
